Omega 3’s are an important topic when it comes to health.  They are polyunsaturated fats but also essential fats; this means the body cannot make this type of fat on its own, so it must be obtained from your diet.

So what exactly do they do for your body? Consuming these fatty acids can lead to great health benefits. Omega 3’s are essential for a proper nervous system, healthy vision and cognitive function. Studies also show that Omega 3 has beneficial effects on bones and joints; helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Fish oil is made up of two types of omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Together, DHA and EPA reduce the overall number of triglycerides, or blood lipids—which means fish oil is a good thing for your heart. There are also quite a few studies linking DHA and EPA with depression. A relationship between chronic inflammation and symptoms of depression has been established, so it makes sense that anti-inflammatory fish oil can help to relieve those symptoms.

Supplementing fish Fish oil during pregnancy doesn’t just protect the unborn baby, but a UK survey found that pregnant women with diets low in Omega 3 were at a higher risk of depression. (*Dr Alex Richardson, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention, University of Oxford; and Founder Director of FAB Research.)
