Research shows that nearly 50% of Britons fear their loved ones could suffer from a heart attack or experience other heart problems due to their lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the UK- so it’s so important we do everything we can to keep our hearts healthy.

The first thing we can do to reduce the risk of developing heart and circulatory problems is keeping a healthy diet.  Polyunsaturated fats which are found in some fish, nuts, avocados and seeds are good choices for eating your way to a healthy heart. An inactive lifestyle is also one of the top risk factors for heart disease.  Taking part in aerobic exercise whether it’s on the treadmill at the gym, or climbing an extra flight of stairs on your way to the office can help with stronger circulation. Learning to manage stress and reducing bad habits like smoking and excessive drinking can all contribute to a strong heart, keeping your arteries clean and high cholesterol levels at bay.

It can be difficult to consume all the nutrients we need for heart health through diet alone, which is why taking a supplement can give you an extra health boost.

A lot of research has been carried out to show that Fish Oil can benefit the heart. Fish Oil contains Omega 3 fatty acids which are essential polyunsaturated fats. This means that the body cannot make them on its own, so we must consume them through supplements or diet. Fish Oil contains Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Many studies have been carried out to show that these two fatty acids are associated with a lower risk of heart failure and work to reduce triglyceride levels and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.  So, how exactly does Fish Oil work to help to keep our hearts healthy?

• Supplementing Fish Oil can help slow the build-up of plaque to your arteries. This plaque is known as atherosclerosis and is made up of debris like calcium and cholesterol. Left unchecked, it can lead to heart failure.

• According to the British Heart Foundation, having untreated high blood pressure can leave your heart unable to function properly. However, many studies have been carried out to show that supplementing with Fish Oil can help to reduce blood pressure- even as much as lifestyle changes such as lowering salt intake and exercising.

• Sticky blood can occur as a result of poor diet, weight gain and smoking. It can damage the lining of the blood vessels, which increases risk of heart attack. Of course, stopping smoking and having a healthy diet will definitely help, but Omega 3 Fish Oil is known to decrease blood platelet activity, slowing down blood clotting and thinning blood.

• Lastly, Omega 3 works to reduce inflammation in your body. Not only does it help with inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, but it helps with inflammation in the heart and arteries.
