In the fitness and nutrition world trends appear on a daily basis which can sometimes be conflicting and confusing. It’s hard to keep up with all the things you should or shouldn’t be doing to stay healthy. Here are 5 ways you can fight the diet overwhelm and keep it simple!

healthy eating

  • Slow down

Are you always the first at the table to finish dinner? This could be having a negative impact on your health, especially if you are looking to lose weight. Chewing your food properly can make a huge difference to how much you eat. Chewing helps to trigger the body’s satiety mechanisms, which tells us when we are full. If you eat too quickly, then chances are, your brain hasn’t had the chance to catch up with your body and realise you are actually full!

  • Portion control

Are you using very large plates and bowls, or pouring yourself a large glass of wine at dinner? Taking the time to measure out your portions rather than being guided by your crockery size can make a big difference to your calorie and sugar intake.

  • Healthy snacks

Be careful not to graze on the wrong foods. A biscuit or slice of cake here and then is fine, but try to have a fruit bowl on hand topped up with tempting and colourful seasonal options. Not only will this keep you on top of your five a day, but provides you with a sweet alternative to cakes and biscuits.

  • Stay hydrated

Whether at home or work, keep a water bottle in an easy to reach location, to act as a reminder to stay hydrated. Sometimes we can confuse dehydration with hunger as the symptoms are similar. For instance, when we feel weak and dizzy or have headaches, it’s easy to think that our blood sugar levels are low when actually, we just need to hydrate ourselves. Drinking water will also boost your energy levels, help with digestion and help you to resist tempting sugary snacks!

  • Stay organised

Organise your cupboard and fridge so that healthy snacks are within easy reach, and anything that won’t support your health goals are hidden away. Take out carrots, cherry tomatoes and celery from your veg drawers and keep them at the front of the fridge next to a pot of hummus- this will give you inspiration for a healthy and easy snack.
